We really like the Battery Powered Thomas.  You set up the track and then watch Thomas go over it.

Our kids have really enjoyed playing with Moon Sand out on our deck on a little picnic table.  They drive their Matchbox / Hot Wheels pickup trucks, bulldozers, dump trucks and snow plows through it.
