November 2011-July 2012 Tweets

I have been backing up my tweets here for a long time now because Twitter is where I am doing most of my "blogging" these days. But I was disturbed to learn recently that you can only access your last 350 tweets so I am glad I have been doing this. See the most recent tweet below about that.

I reflected on the "marks of the church" in comment #90 at "Marks of the Church: Driscoll’s Proposal" at @scotmcknight http://www.patheos.com/blogs/jesuscre …

@mattleeanderson Yes, you argue for a Christianly-limited "patriotism" that is grateful for past good things and calls for improvement. Ok.

@matthewamoser Stanley Hauerwas says, "Write a draft of the whole thing. You can revise after you see what you have written."

@matthewamoser 80,000-100,000 is the policy but I am only in ch. 3 of 5 so will need to prune a lot eventually.

"The final version should be between 80,000 and 100,000 words, including notes and bibliography." http://divinity.duke.edu/sites/default/ … / 67,450 so far.

@matthewamoser I'm at 67,450 words on the dissertation–almost exactly the same as you . . Hopefully 800 more this afternoon.

Wrote 10 more mins; now can have guilt-free day. "Write" too fancy–like dressage. Intimidating. How about Scrawl, scribble, spew?

The enemy of a bad 1st draft–the source of all good writing–is our perfectionism. It's the voice of the oppressor. Flounder as radical act

In Bird x B, I wrote about writing your story as a letter (or e-mail) to your safest person. No critic–just you telling 1 friend 1 story.

(4) We need far more Christian public voices like Ross Douthat. And the good news is I believe they are on their way.

(3) For me, the book was worth the price for pages 240–241 alone—a powerful diagnosis of the consequences of "God Within" spirituality.

(2) The book does not have nearly as many flaws as its progressive critics (Silk, Winters) claim. It is overall judicious and careful.

(1) There is little here that those who have read JD Hunter, Christian Smith, Mark Noll, and Rod Dreher will find terribly surprising/novel.

Okay, having finished Ross Douthat's _Bad Religion,_ my evaluation follows in four tweets.

Hauerwas: "The biggest threat to the ministry is adultery and it is not because pastors have too much energy (i.e. lust). It is loneliness."

Hauerwas to future pastors: I want to give you two things to do. Never marry anyone you don't know. Never bury anyone in a funeral home.

Hauerwas:The great problem in the ministry today is loneliness. One of the great challenges is how to be friends with those you are serving.

Hauerwas: "So the minister retreats home from the church to the family but no spouse can love another spouse that much."

Hauerwas: "You begin to hate the people you're serving because of their unlimited demands on you."

Hauerwas: Ministry today is like being nibbled to death by ducks. Since "you don't work" people think they can ask you to do anything.

Hauerwas on 1 Cor 11:29-30. "I suspect most people in our churches are not dying from eating the Eucharist unworthily but out of boredom."

Tweets from May 2011 to November 2011 on writing, Karl Barth, John Howard Yoder, and random musings

I have posted my latest batch of tweets from Twitter for the last six months below.  I have tweeted about once every other day: 180 days / 100 tweets.  This 100 includes "Retweets" which are tweets by other people that I thought were worth passing along.  I have been doing most of my “blogging” on Twitter the last couple of years.  I basically try to share quality insights so I think the tweets may have some enduring value but I also post them here for myself because saving my tweets on the blog helps me to access them easily through search–Google searches the blog but not Twitter.

  • You can "follow" me by setting up a Twitter account.  You yourself need not actually post any tweets, you can just follow people.
  • Or, you can subscribe to my tweets by RSS feed such as Google Reader which I am using with Feedly.com these days.
  • Or you can just click on my Twitter page and scroll through my posts.
  • For more tweets see my Twitter category on the blog.
  • So, here are my tweets from June 2, 2011 when I last pasted my tweets into my blog and today November 16, 2011.

    Warm greetings to any readers.

Tweets from November 2009 to May 2011 mostly on Barth, Bonhoeffer, Newbigin, Yoder, Hauerwas, mission, church and the New Testament

I have been doing most of my “blogging” on Twitter the last year and a half.  I thought I would copy my tweets from my Twitter account to the blog for posterity and searchability (accessibility).

Why Twitter?  I suppose the reason I have been mostly posting on Twitter is that (a) I tell myself these thoughts are little insights that don't deserve an entire blogpost (but on further reflection I realize most people's blogs are indeed these little thoughts and so perhaps the most basic reason is that) (b) I want to share resources with folks and enjoy the connection with people who appreciate them, but I need to be focusing on my doctoral work at Duke and my family and Twitter is fast and happily limited by 140 characters.

So, here are my tweets from Nov 9, 2009 when I last pasted my tweets into my blog and today May 16, 2011.

    Warm greetings to any readers.

    Andy

  • You can follow me by setting up a Twitter account.  You yourself need not actually post any tweets, you can just follow people.
  • Or, you can subscribe to my tweets by RSS feed such as Google Reader.
  • Or you can just click on my Twitter page and scroll through my posts.
