January Library Books

We requested new library books.  Almost all were recommended by the Parents’ Choice Awards.  I found a few others in the bestselling books at Amazon in the subcategory: Books > Children’s Books > Arts & Music > Art

I often paste the books we ordered in my Library Books category as a way of remembering which books we have gotten.  I always urge people to get books that come recommended from some reputable source because you have a better chance of having a good experience reading to your kids.  It is glorious that our library tracks down the books and puts them on a shelf for us.  Thank you Durham County Library.

All the best,

Andy.

The Well Blog on Health and Social Intelligence by Daniel Goleman

On parenting, I have enjoyed two resources recently that I thought I would mention.

1.  Social Intelligence by Daniel Goleman. Goleman talks a lot about how children’s brains develop through relationships.

2. Consider these posts from The New York Times Well Blog: Tara Parker-Pope (and others) on Health:

Remedies: Honey for Coughing

Honey does work pretty well.

Phys Ed: Why Wii Fit Is Best for Grandparents

Kids don’t get that much exercise from Wii.

Phys Ed: The Benefits of Weight Training for Children

Weight training is good for kids.  They do get stronger even if they don’t bulk up in appearance.

Two Pediatrician Moms Offer Baby Advice

This book looks good for new moms and dads.

Jim Trelease’s Favorite Kindergarten Novels

I have said many times how I recommend Jim Trelease’s book The Read-Aloud Handbook.  He recommends books for you to read to your kids and his taste is excellent.

On his website, he lists his favorite kindergarten novels

Jim Trelease’s Favorite Kindergarten Novels (with my comments)

(in order of difficulty according to Trelease)

  • Two Times the Fun by Beverly Cleary–The Cleary one is a compilation of stories.  We were only able to find Two Dog Biscuits and The Real Hole at our library.
  • Chibi: A True Story from Japan by Barbara Brenner & J. Takaya
  • Junie B. Jones and the Stupid Smelly Bus
by Barbara Park–a little edgy but memorable
  • The Chalk Box Kid by Clyde Robert Bulla
  • My Father’s Dragon by Ruth Stiles Gannett–My Father’s Dragon is fun.  There are also two sequels.
  • Chocolate Fever by Robert Kimmel Smith–Amy read this one.
  • Dinosaurs Before Dark by Mary Pope Osborne–Dinosaurs before Dark is the first of the Magic Tree House series.
  • The Reluctant Dragon adapted by Inga Moore–delightful classic.  Audio also available of this one.
  • The Stories Julian Tells by Ann Cameron–short–one sitting.
  • The Water Horse by Dick King-Smith–Lots of fun!
  • Wolf Story by William McCleery–Wolf Story is a bit more challenging–it is about a dad telling stories to his son and his friend.
  • James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl–Amy read this one.

 I wholeheartedly recommend Trelease’s book.
