Our kids have really enjoyed playing with Moon Sand out on our deck on a little picnic table. They drive their Matchbox / Hot Wheels pickup trucks, bulldozers, dump trucks and snow plows through it.

DUPLO bricks are great for 18 months to 5 years
Duplos are expensive. We were fortunate enough to be given a lot of them. Our five year old started using then when he was two and continues to enjoy them. We work with our DUPLO bricks and LEGOs on a blanket or sheet so they are easy to pick up when we are finished.
